History of Oberon
In 1928 the Catholic Daughters of St. John's Cathedral Parish started the Children's Carnival with the intent of providing a wholesome activity of the children of Lafayette on Mardi Gras day. They chose as the names of their King and Queen, "Oberon and Titania," the names attributed by Shakespeare in his Midsummer Night's Dream to the King and Queen of Fairyland. Children's Carnival continued under the auspices of the Catholic Daughters first, Court Immaculata of St. John's Cathedral Parish and then Court Alice Boucher of St. Genevieve's Parish until the early 1970's when the Northside High Boy's key Club began to sponsor the group. In 1975, Children’s Carnival became a Mardi Gras Krewe and it adopted the name of its King, thus becoming the Krewe of Oberon Children's Carnival. The Krewe of Oberon is the oldest children's Krewe in Lafayette.
