About Krewe of Oberon

The Children's Carnival in Lafayette, Louisiana, has a rich tradition dating back to 1928. Initially started by the Catholic Daughters of St. John's Cathedral Parish, the event aimed to provide a wholesome activity for children on Mardi Gras Day.

The Catholic Daughters chose "Oberon and Titania" for their King and Queen, attributed to the King and Queen of Fairyland in Shakespeare's play, "A Midsummer Night's Dream." This choice of names added a touch of enchantment and fantasy to the event.

Over the years, the Children's Carnival continued under different Catholic Daughters courts, including Court Immaculata of St. John's Cathedral Parish and later Court Alice Boucher of St. Genevieve's Parish. In the early 1970s, the Northside High Boy's Key Club took over the group's sponsorship.

Then, in 1975, the Children's Carnival transformed into a Mardi Gras Krewe and adopted the name of its King, becoming the Krewe of Oberon Children's Carnival. This transition marked a significant milestone in the history of the event. The Krewe of Oberon Children's Carnival holds the distinction of being the oldest children's Krewe in Lafayette.

The Krewe of Oberon Children's Carnival has likely continued to provide a joyous and festive experience for children in Lafayette during the Mardi Gras season, carrying on the tradition that began nearly a century ago.

We believe all children should have the opportunity to experience the joy and wonder of Mardi Gras, and we strive to make that a reality for every child who joins us.
